JOB DESCRIPTION

Digital Officer

This is a great opportunity to play a vital role in a global research institute, strategically developing ODI’s digital platforms, creating content and providing oversight and technical guidance on the development of digital products. You will use your knowledge of the latest digital trends to identify opportunities to innovate and improve our communications.

This role will increase the impact of ODI’s conflict and humanitarian research and policy engagement through designing and delivering strategic, creative and well-coordinated digital plans and products. Working primarily with the Humanitarian Policy Group (HPG) and the Humanitarian Practice Network (HPN), the postholder will be responsible for extending the digital outreach of HPG and HPN’s projects and outputs. You will be a digital all-rounder who is confident in developing creative and well-coordinated digital plans; coordinating website development projects; maintaining social media presence and managing external suppliers.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Create and update SEO-friendly website content for odi.org, including programme website pages, blogs and multimedia, using ODI’s content management system (Drupal)

• Manage programme websites including commissioning and creating content and liaising with external agencies on website development, security and hosting

• Develop new digital and multimedia content; including commissioning and creating content (long-form, videos, podcasts, animations) and liaising with external agencies ensuring high quality and adherence with ODI’s brand

• Project-manage improvements and web development for programme websites, with a primary focus on HPG, the HPN website and the Good Practice Review microsites

• Manage programme Twitter/Facebook accounts, including posting content, monitoring conversations and engaging with followers

• Support researchers to develop timely, relevant blogs for publication on odi.org or influential external platforms

• Draft, lay out and send programme email newsletters, and maintain subscriber lists

• Coordinate with external providers on commissioning infographics and data visualisations as necessary

• Support ODI’s wider work on Public Affairs and Communications in close collaboration with the Senior Digital Officer and Senior Communications Officer (Humanitarian and Conflict)

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

· Digital communications skills and experience, including: website management; email marketing; strategic use of social media for an organisation or business; content creation; multimedia; and SEO.

· Experience using content management systems

· Excellent writing skills, and the ability to summarise research information in clear, web-friendly, non-specialist language

· Good knowledge of social media, digital platforms and web content best practice

· Ability to work collegially with researchers, helping to shape research communications for target audiences

· Excellent IT and data management skills, including Microsoft Office

· Strong attention to detail

· Self-starter – ability to generate plans and ideas and carry them through to completion

· Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to liaise and communicate with colleagues at all levels of seniority and from different cultures

· Excellent organisational, prioritisation and project management skills

· Ability to work to strict deadlines and under pressure

· Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team

· Experience of managing relationships with external agencies and freelancers

· Ability to quickly pick up new software and tools; willingness to learn new skills

Desirable:

· Specialist skills and experience in events management, publications production, design, media and/or public affairs

· Familiarity with Drupal and WordPress

· Basic understanding of HTML and CSS

· Interest and/or knowledge on humanitarian and conflict issues

· Experience in research communications

· Other languages
