Job Description

Job Responsibilities

  • Design and analyses of technical development projects, mechanical systems with multiple moving parts; Defining project specs and project plans; working with manufacturing processes/systems and the ability to translate this knowledge into design direction for new designs and existing product improvements;
  • Independently creating structural analyses of machinery and small scale architectural assemblies; working with structural analysis tools, both manual calculations and automated software approaches (FEAs);
  • Working with weldments and/or welded structures; exhibiting fluency in parts/assemblies; Exhibiting an understanding of and experience with MIL-STD-810 environmental requirements and resulting design issues; product validation and durability testing;
  • Initiating and leading cross functional team meetings and design reviews to complete mechanical design (concept through launch); Applying DFM/DFA principles to the mechanical design and creating multiple concepts, thoroughly evaluating each, and presenting them for design reviews by peers.

Founded in 1998, World Energy produces and operates biodiesel manufacturing plants in Houston, Mississippi, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Ontario. In addition, World Energy has also recently invested $85M in the acquisition of a renewable diesel refinery, distribution terminal and pipeline system located in the all-important Southern California market. The company has initiated expansion projects that, when completed, will make it the largest producer of biomass-based diesel in North America.  Earlier this year, World Energy took on a substantial new partner to accelerate growth in both scale and reach. In addition to expanding its manufacturing capabilities, the company is dramatically increasing its focus on its sourcing and downstream supply chain activities.

Summary

The Plant Engineer will provide day-to-day technical support with emphasis on plant improvements, process safety, and process consistency. The plant engineer will interface with various functional teams including Safety & Environmental Services (S&ES), Maintenance, Reliability, Project Engineering, Productivity, Process Controls, Process Safety.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Maintain protection of the environment and the health and safety of our employees, customers, and the communities in which we operate and/or transport our products as our highest priority.
  • Evaluate, design, and recommend changes in maintenance activities to increase reliability of existing equipment, reduce repair costs and minimize product interruptions.
  • Provide ongoing engineering assistance to operations and maintenance. Troubleshoot process operating problems, investigate equipment failures, conduct special tests, develop reports and provide technical assistance as required.
  • Develop and institute plans for preventive/predictive maintenance on equipment, routine replacement of equipment and improvement of material of construction. Supervise installation, monitor performance and make recommendations to improve reliability and reduce cost.
  • Provide troubleshooting and technical support during planned and unplanned outages.
  • Day to day support of Maintenance and Reliability preventive maintenance and routine repairs.
  • Field oversight of PM efficacy and adjustment of PM’s as needed.
  • Responsible for standard equipment repairs including issuing Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) as required.
  • Responsible for second level troubleshooting of field equipment issues and major equipment overhauls.
  • Improve the reliability of the plant by analyzing performance and developing a preventive and predictive maintenance program.
  • Develop and maintain KPI’s to monitor equipment reliability.
  • Facilitate RCA’s and coordinate solutions to improve reliability.
  • Develop and implement the PPM program for the site, including documentation.
  • Ensure PPM program for new installations are established and communicated.
  • Address all equipment failures beyond normal life cycle and equipment inspection results.
  • Responsible for standard Capital equipment replacements or overhauls.
  • Provide production and maintenance support for normal operation, project work, startup/shutdown for equipment.
  • Provide coordination between the Production, Project, Process and Corporate Engineering Departments regarding capital project implementation including preparation of RPA’s.
  • Manage local capital projects to improve reliability, including project budgets and schedules.
  • Assist in project start-ups with respect to mechanical aspects.
  • Support Integrated Continuous Improvement program.
  • Ensure improvement initiatives comply with EHS Requirements, local laws, and applicable standards.
  • Participate in Risk Assessments such as PHA’s to provide mechanical engineering expertise.
  • Support plant and corporate initiatives as outlined in the manufacturing plan.
  • Ensure compliance of personal safety, quality and assigned training is up to date.
  • Report incidents, near misses and improvement possibilities.
  • Support site energy and sustainability programs as necessary.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • MS or BS Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering degree with 3+ years Maintenance / Project Engineering experience in refining, petrochemical, or chemical process preferred.
  • Ability to manage costs, design, implement, and maintain systems designed to optimize the performance of the maintenance function.
  • Basic understanding of industry codes and standards (i.e. API, ASME).
  • Ability to apply computer software tools (Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, CMMS)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to read, write and speak in English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of industry codes, regulations, and best practices.
  • Physical requirements – Must be able to lift 40 lbs., climb ladders and stairs. Walking, bending, stooping is required. Must be able to wear personal protective equipment including the use of a respirator. Must be able to respond to visual and audible alarms.
  • Willing and able to adapt to a work schedule that coincides with plant operational needs, to work for extended periods of time in an operating plant under various environmental conditions and to work inside of confined spaces.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills.

Job Knowledge

  • Knowledge of rotating equipment design, installation and maintenance, including hands on troubleshooting of pumps, compressors and agitators.
  • Knowledge and understanding of plant mechanical integrity programs and predictive technologies including vibration, thermography, lubrication analysis and ultrasonic.
  • Knowledge of fixed equipment design, installation and maintenance, including tanks, vessels, piping etc.
  • Knowledge of relevant engineering practices.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and EHS manufacturing standards.
  • Knowledge of multiple chemical production processes and specific requirements
