Fundación Promoción Social (Social Promotion Foundation) works to build a culture of solidarity centred on the individual and the need for better and more dignified living conditions, work, freedom and social participation for all. It was founded in Madrid in 1987. Its activity in the field of international cooperation has been realized in more than 200 projects in different countries of Latin America, Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean Region, where the Foundation has worked continuously since 1992. Working in the Middle East is one of the Foundation’s priorities. In 2004, the FPSC obtained General Consultative Status with United Nations ECOSOC, and in 2005 it was awarded Qualified NGDO status by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID). Lebanon is the first country in the Middle East region in which the Foundation began to work. The first identification tasks were carried out on the ground in 1992, and the first project, co-funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation and the European Union and aimed at strengthening the economic activity of farmers in northern Lebanon, got under way the following year. This intervention would soon be followed by others to meet the most urgent needs of the population during that period: rural development, primary health care, rehabilitation and reconstruction, support to PED, aid for refugees and people displaced by the war, etc Taking into account the situation in the region and the type of intervention, other aspects have also been considered in each one of the actions, such as gender equality, environmental sustainability and support for social minorities, which in the context of the region require specific attention. This process of coordination centred on local strategies, essential for achieving the Millennium Goals, has enabled the Foundation to focus its work on priority sectors in this region such as education, care for the disabled and vulnerable, promotion of the economic fabric and job creation, rural development, or actions to promote coexistence and peace.
